WATCH METAL STRAP SIZING

Your MALI watch comes with an adjustable metal watch strap with links.

REASONS FOR WATCH RESIZING

Resizing is important so that the watch is secure on your wrist. A watch that is too loose can fall off and similarly a watch too tight can break the strap. A perfectly fitted timepiece customized to your body also has a nice feel of style and sophistication to it.

The process of watch resizing will vary based on the type of band. If ‘s a metal linked watch, you may need links added or removed to change the size. Sometimes it can also be a clasp adjustment or punching a new hole in leather, fabric, or rubber. We offer different types of resizing   based on the watch material

 DETERMINING THE STRAP SIZE

Please use a tape measure. Wrap the tape measure around the wrist on which you plan to wear your MALI watch.

  1. The MALI Wrist Sizer must be printed on full-size A4 paper. Please Follow the instructions below meticulously.
  2. Click to download the MALI Watch Sizer here. Once downloaded , open and print it.
  3. Please ensure before you print this out you set the "Page Size & Handling” to “Actual Size” OR “Page scaling” to "None"  OR Set Scale to 100% in the dialogue box as appropriate.
  4. Cut out and warp around your wrist and mark the nearest no in centimetres (cm).
  5. This is your wrist size Write it down.

GETTING YOUR STRAP ADJUSTED

  1. When choosing a watch for purchase, go to WATCH BRACELET RESIZING and select “YES” to enable customization
  2. Enter your WRIST SIZE in CENTIMETRES to get the right fit for your watch and then add to cart.
  3. Our MALI specialists will adjust the strap according to your preferred fit and the specific features of the model. (Please note adjustments are only available for stainless steel straps.
  4. Any links removed when the bracelet is adjusted will be supplied in the case (stored beneath the display cushion).
  5. Keep the spare links in case the watch should need to be re-adjusted in the future. To avoid damaging your MALI watch, we do not recommend adjusting the bracelet yourself.

  WATCH CARE

Your MALI watch deserves due care and attention. We recommend the following daily considerations, so that it is preserved as long as possible:

  • Keep your watch away from prolonged exposure to magnetism.
  • Avoid wearing a bracelet on the same wrist.
  • Do not wear your watch while sleeping.
  • Avoid wearing your watch when playing sports such as golf or tennis.
  • Avoid extreme changes in temperature and humidity, such as saunas.
  • If your watch is equipped with an automatic mechanical movement, have the bracelet property sized to your wrist by our customisation service to ensure the optimal winding of the movement.
  • You can clean your watch with a soft dry cloth, regardless of water resistance.

 YOUR MALI WATCH AND WATER…

Your watch is certified water-resistant and its water-resistance is ensured by a series of seals. Before any contact with water, however, please ensure that the crown of your watch is not pulled out. When your watch is under water, do not activate the push-pieces for the chronograph function, the minute-repeater or the second time zone. After swimming, make sure to rinse your water-resistant watch in fresh water so as to neutralise the harmful effects of sea-water or chlorine.
Ensure your watch’s ATM is specified for swimming by checking our ATM GUIDE

Your watch’s water resistance rating indicates how much pressure the watch can withstand before water seeps in. It is measured in ATM (atmospheres) or meters of depth, but other units are used as well, such as feet and bar. The water resistance rating is usually marked on the back of the watch case    but sometimes features on the dial as well.

What does ATM rating mean?

One atmosphere (1 ATM) is equivalent to the air pressure at sea level. For example, a  watch with a water resistance rating of 10 ATM can withstand air pressure of up to 10 atmospheres, or 100 meters (about 330 feet) underwater.

Most watches have a water resistance rating of between 30m (3 ATM) and 300m (30 ATM), but there are some that go up to 1,000m (100 ATM).

“Water-resistant” means the watch is resistant to water to a certain degree but is not “waterproof.”  Please note there is clear difference between water resistant and water proof. Water-resistant watches haven’t been tested in real-life conditions, i.e., in salty and moving water, without considering the corrosion, the strap attachment, or magnetic and shock resistance. The reality is that a 30m water-resistant watch will most certainly fail 30 meters deep in the ocean, as will a 50m and a 100m timepiece in respective depths. It may withstand one-time pressure in the stated depth, but that’s about it.

 YOUR WATCH & YOUR BATTERY

We recommend replacing the watch battery replacement every 2 years.

The most common reason for replacement is a watch has completely stopped. A sign a watch battery is dying is that it will start losing time. Please replace the battery right away. Dead batteries that sit in your watch can leak and cause internal damage. More sophisticated watch owners change the battery is a matter of routine then necessity. To change a battery, take your watch to an authorized an authorised dealer or repair centre.

THE MOVEMENT, THE HEART OF YOUR WATCH

With its intricate mechanism, especially for automatic watches, need to be cleaned at regular periods. This is because, over time, the oils it contains dry out and may cause friction which will affect the accuracy of the mechanism.

A service carried out once every five years by an authorised watchmaker will enable you to preserve the precision and reliability of your watch movement. If your watch is noticeably fast or slow, the movement may need to be serviced before five years have elapsed, depending on how often you wear it.

NOTE: Even if you do not wear it regularly, a mechanical watch must be periodically wound up so that the workings of the movement are regularly oiled.

 AUTOMATIC AND MECHANICAL MOVEMENTS

Quartz watches are driven by the energy supplied by a battery. Watches equipped with a mechanical movement work because of a spring which needs to be wound up so as to supply energy.  Automatic (self-winding) mechanical watches also use the spring system, but the winding of the spring is carried out by the oscillating mass of the movement. The movement of our automatic watches are more delicate than that of a conventional quartz watch since it contains a very large number of components. The smaller the components, the more delicate they are.

The recommendations made below will help you to preserve your complication watch for many years to come, with all its accuracy, regularity of rate and authenticity.

  • You will need to turn the crown to wind up the spring, if your watch has manual winding.
  • If your watch is an automatic mechanical movement, the spring is wound up by the movements of your wrist, which cause an oscillation which supplies the energy required for the winding system.
  • If you are not particularly active or do not often wear your watch, the mechanism of your watch may not be wound up enough for it to work properly. Whether it is mechanical or automatic, your watch may be slightly fast or slow, depending on how you wear it.
  • When setting the time and date on your watch, respect the time and date adjustment periods specific to its movement.
  • Changing the date between 10 pm and 2 am (or between 8 pm and 2 am for some mechanisms) may damage the gear-trains already set in motion.
  • Do not force the crown when you feel that the spring is tense at the end of the winding process
  • Never set your watch to the right time when the striking mechanism or perpetual calendar are in operation.
  • Keep your watch away from all sources of magnetism, e.g., smartphones and computers, but also magnetised handbag clasps, loudspeakers or airport metal detectors. These   generate strong magnetic fields which may have an effect on your watch's movement ranging from minor interference to actually causing it to stop.
  • We recommend you do wear your watch when playing sports such as golf or tennis in order to protect the movement from undue vibrations that might damage it,
  • When your watch is not being worn, wind its movement for approximately a dozen turns of the crown to prevent the oils it contains from drying out
  • In a quartz watch, the is supplied by a battery. Quartz watches have no wheel or spring balance, and the timekeeping element is all done by a crystal of quartz. Wherever you are and whatever position the watch is in, its accuracy will always be identical

IF YOUR WATCH HAS A LEATHER STRAP

The care and tests that we devote to Mali leather watch-straps ensure that they are of the highest quality, enjoying in normal conditions of use an average lifespan of between six and twelve months.

Please note however that contact with water or any other liquid may accelerate wear and tear on the strap.

We recommend that you entrust the changing of your watch's leather strap to a Mali-authorised Service Centre. We usually offer a choice of models that fit your watch case perfectly, fitted with tongue buckles or adjustable folding clasps of certified authenticity.

IF YOUR WATCH HAS A SILICONE OR RUBBER STRAP

The care and tests that we devote to Mali rubber watch-straps ensure that they are of the highest quality, enjoying in normal conditions of use an average lifespan of eighteen months. However, please note that a dense urban environment and intense exposure to sunlight may cause the premature ageing of the strap.

The day-to-day maintenance of a rubber strap can be ensured by cleaning it with soapy water. Contact with cosmetic varnishes should be avoided. We recommend you to entrust the changing of your watch's rubber strap to a Mali -authorised After-Sales Service

IF YOUR WATCH HAS A METAL BRACELET

To keep your metal bracelet in good condition, minimise the effects of wear and tear and ensure an optimal lifespan, we particularly recommend you to have it adjusted so that if fits closely to the wrist. We also suggest cleaning it once every two months, if worn on a daily basis. Before cleaning, please always ensure that the crown of your watch is not pulled out.

CHECKING IF YOUR WATCH IS STILL WATER-RESISTANT.

Your watch’s water-resistance of your watch is maintained by a system of seals. The seals are constantly placed under pressure and impacted by natural wear and tear. We recommend regular check of the watch's water-resistance to determine whether the seals need to be replaced. We recommended to have the water-resistance seals replaced once every two years. (For quartz watches, do it at approximately the same as for battery replacement.)

 MAGNETIC FIELDS & YOUR WATCH?

We are surrounded by magnetic fields, whose strength   varies depending on our environment. If they are strong enough, they may affect the movement of your watch by disturbing its functioning. A magnetic field may cause a quartz watch to lose several seconds. However, as soon as it emerges from the magnetic field it will regain its normal functioning. Magnetism will disturb mechanical watches and affect their functioning by making the spring of the movement stick. We recommended you avoid magnetic fields on a permanent basis.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT MAGNETIC FIELDS?

Magnetic fields are invisible and all around us. They are mostly created by magnets, in loudspeakers, cell phones, smartphones, magnetic closing systems of refrigerators or cupboards, magnetic clasps for handbags etc. How do you know your watch is magnetized? Place it near a compass and observe whether the needles start to move around. If your watch is magnetized, we recommend you take it to an authorised Repair Centre to demagnetize it.

WHY DO I NEED TO HAVE MY WATCH SERVICED REGULARLY?

The movement of your watch needs to be maintained at regular intervals. Changes in the viscosity of the oil (resulting in the oil drying out after a certain time) may generate friction and thus affect the precision of the mechanism, causing it to run fast or slow or to stop completely.

If your watch is noticeably fast or slow, the movement may need to be serviced for this reason. We recommend you to have the movement of your watch checked once every five years by a Mali Authorized Service Centre
